Back to School- Observations around the Pōmaika'i campus
Welcome to grade 4!
Returning to school is so exciting. I am always interested in what has changed in our built and natural environments.
What changes have you noticed around school since you have been back?

In the Native Garden on the NE side of our campus, I noticed that the seed pods on the wiliwili tree were completely dry and curled. I decided to harvest them before the pods opened and bird or insects got to the seeds.
Take a look at the photo of the seed pods. What do you see? What do you wonder? What does it make you think?

I noticed a small hole in one of the pods. The hole looked very uniform to me- not like a scratch or a crack but more like something had drilled into the thick outside covering of the pod. I wondered if an insect had made the hole and, if so, would the seeds inside have been ruined. When I opened the pod, I was pleased to seethe seeds looked intact. I decided to take some basic measurements so I would have some data about these seeds.
Take a look at the seed photos and some of the measurements I took. What other data about the pods or the seeds might be useful?

OOPS!! My pictures of the scale are cut-off! The smaller seed weighs 6.3 grams and the larger seed weighs 17.4 grams.
What's Next? I have stored the seeds in a cool, dry place. I have begun to do some research about how best to propagate wiliwili from seed, click the button below to read what I have found so far- stay tuned!
